Getting Started with AI Insights

This section helps you get started with Foglight AI Insights. Learn about prerequisites, licensing, and how to begin using AI chat.

Prerequisites

Before you can access Foglight AI Insights, ensure that:

  • You have a valid QTDMP (Quest Trusted Data Management Platform) account. For information about setting up your QTDMP account, see Working with Quest Trusted Data Management Platform
  • Your organization administrator has granted you access to Foglight AI Insights
  • An active Foglight AI license has been activated for your organization with at least one monitored database or infrastructure target in Foglight

Security and Access Control

Foglight AI Insights uses role-based access control (RBAC) to manage user permissions within the Quest Trusted Data Management Platform (QTDMP). Your organization administrator manages user roles and access permissions.

Role-Based Access

The following roles control access to Foglight AI Insights features:

  • Foglight AI Insights User - Allows users to access and use Foglight AI Insights Chat, ask questions, and view results
  • Foglight AI Insights Administrator - Allows administrators to manage MCP server configurations and organization-wide settings

If you need access to Foglight AI Insights but do not have the appropriate role assigned, contact your organization administrator.

Licensing

Foglight AI Insights uses a credit-based licensing model. Your organization receives a shared pool of credits (questions) that all users access together.

Credit and Question Terminology: One credit equals one question. When you ask a question in Foglight AI Insights, one credit is consumed from your organization’s pool.

Questions Involving Multiple MCP Servers: When a single question is answered using more than one connected MCP server, one credit is counted for each MCP server involved in the query. For example, a question that draws on two MCP servers consumes two credits from your organization’s pool.

Question Entitlement

  • Question Pool: Your organization license includes a specified number of questions/credits (e.g., 12,000 questions per pack)
  • Shared Across Users: All users in your organization draw from the same question pool
  • Real-Time Consumption: Each question you ask decrements the pool by 1
  • Multiple MCP Servers: If a question involves more than one connected MCP server, one credit is counted for each MCP server involved in the query
  • Pool Status: You can see your remaining question count in the Foglight AI Insights app
  • When Pool is Exhausted: When your organization reaches zero questions, the chat interface locks for all users. You can still read previous saved conversations but cannot ask new questions

Activating Your License

To activate your Foglight AI Insights license:

  1. Open the QTDMP portal at https://data.quest.com.
  2. Log in with your QTDMP credentials.
  3. Select your organization.
  4. Navigate to Settings > Subscriptions.
  5. Click Add Subscription and enter your Serial Number (provided in the welcome email you received after purchasing the add-on).
  6. The subscription will become available immediately.

Finding Your Serial Number: Check the welcome email you received from Quest after purchasing your Foglight AI Insights add-on. The serial number is required to activate your license in QTDMP. Contact your organization administrator if you need help with license activation or to purchase additional question packs.

Quick Start

  1. Navigate to https://data.quest.com and log in to QTDMP with your credentials.
  2. Navigate to Foglight > AI Insights Chat in QTDMP.
  3. Set up MCP Server. For IDE integration, see Adding MCP Server.
  4. Start by selecting a predefined question from the AI Insights Chat interface, or type your own query in the AI Insights Chats section.
